Afro-Cuban drumming has been preserved in Cuba by African descendants, and traditionalists for hundreds of years. Starting in the 1500's, Spain brought over a million Africans to work for no pay at the sugar cane plantations in the island of Cuba. Ever since, Afro-Cuban drumming has been shared, and preserved throughout Cuba.

Recording artist Virginia López is a percussionist, and she will teach Afro-Cuban rhythms on conga drums, in relationship to clave patterns, drums, and bell patterns. Virginia has been teaching song and conga drum rhythms in Portland, Oregon for decades.

Cuban born (also raised, and educated in Cuba) Virginia López is a Yemayá Priestess in the Lucumí/Regla de Ocha Afro-Cuban tradition.  Amelia Pedroso, ibbaé bayen tonú, initiated Virginia López in 1999, in Havana, Cuba.
